Here comes the hottest month in Thailand. Even April is the hottest, but it is also the most popular time for everyone to join this festival…”Song Kran”
People know that Song Kran is a big day for water fight. Especially in Chiang Mai where it has the moat around the city. But it is actually a break time for people to go back home and spend time with their family after working all year long.
The most fun part would be the water fight. In the past, the way people played was humble and gentle. They pour a only small amount of water on the shoulder or hands. But now, they play rough and hard by using a big water gun or bucket to splash water. The teenagers take advantages of the chaos to drink alcohol and do inappropriate things which they cannot do in normal. According to Chiang Mai newspaper, the statistic from 2010 shows that most of the people who died in Chiang Mai during Song kran festival are male teenagers age between 15-25 who are drunk and perfectly killed themselves by drowning or motorbike crashing.
Isn’t it time to go home and see your beloved ones alive? The main point of this festival is “Family”, the most precious time of the year when you have the ones who truly love you all around. I cannot tell everyone how to play and have fun during this festival properly. I just want to remind you what is more important to your life. Too many people died during this time because they did things careless. I am sure that it is not worth your parents crying for you to become alive again.

I agree that Song Kran Festival is a precious time to celebrate with family and friends. However, today some teenagers celebrate it in the wrong way. They do not pay much attention to the true meaning of the festival, but only have fun. For example, they play too loud dance music all day, drink alcohols and throw water to each other.
ReplyDeleteI hope we and government should help each other to focus more on the real meaning of this valuable culture. Related activities and tradition should be more promoted. So, our children can maintain this beautiful culture for the next generation. Song Kran is not just water fighting festival, but Thai Traditional New Year, a time to start our lives with good things.

I agree that Song Kran festival is time for family reunion. For me, it's the most important and enjoyable festival in Thailand. I used to join the water splashing with my cousin every year when I was young but now I don't feel like it. However, I still like watching people splashing water to each other, and the culture in it.
ReplyDeleteMany campaigns are lunched to prevent the accident such as Drunk Don’t Drive, but, still, several people died during this festival. If people are not responsible, that is, drink and drive, those campaigns will not help. I just hope that in this year the accident rate will decrease.

It's the family time, celebrating Thai New Year. A big dinner or memorial activity will be on this kind of festival. Alcohol should be forbidden when we have to drive. A serious action should be promoted around the moat so that it may remind how to play safely. I think it's a human nature. When we are all in serious controlled, we finally break the rules. That's what we should warn each other how to get a happiness and maintain good tradition from this kind of festival.
